This course is designed for those that wish to deliver their own one-to-one personal training sessions with clients.


A Personal Trainers role includes:

  • Designing and implementing exercise programmes for a range of individual clients
  • Collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness of personal exercise programmes
  • Actively encourage potential clients/ members to join and adhere to regular exercise programmes
  • Carrying out fitness assessments to establish client fitness and skill level
  • Identifying, agreeing and reviewing short, medium and long term goals to ensure the effectiveness of exercise programmes
  • Providing a range of exercise programmes in accordance with the needs of the clients
  • Acting as a positive role model for all clients


This course is internationally recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).


Entry Requirements:


  • Adults (aged 18+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Personal Trainer
  • No academic entry requirements
  • MUST already hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification
  • We strongly recommend that you have experience of gym-based exercises including free weights
  • You should be fit enough to cope with the physical exertion and individual participation involved in the course
  • There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 3


Course content:


Fitness Instructor Level 2:

Unit 1 Anatomy and physiology for health and exercise
Unit 2 Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
Unit 3 Programming personal training with clients
Unit 4 Delivering personal training sessions




This course consists of theory and practical assessments. In order to complete the course we are required to see that you have both the knowledge and the practical skills in order for you to pass.


Theory paper 1
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Exercise

  • This theory paper consists of 40 multiple choice exam questions


Theory paper 2
Unit 2: Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme

    • This theory paper consists of 40 multiple choice exam questions


Practical assessment
Unit 4: Delivering personal training sessions


Learner Achievement Portfolio (LAP)

      • This can be emailed to you as an editable PDF format
      • Your LAP can be emailed back and forth to your tutor until it achieves a pass
      • Your LAP must be complete before you sit your practical assessment
