This course is designed for those who wish to work with clients in a gym setting. With this qualification you will be able to work in any gym as a Fitness Instructor with the general duties of.


A Fitness Instructors duties includes:

  • Demonstrating the correct way to use exercise equipment
  • Delivering exercise classes and workshops
  • Developing personal exercise and diet plans
  • Monitoring the misuse of equipment and ensure the gym is clean and free of health and safety hazards


This course is internationally recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).


Entry Requirements:


  • Anyone wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as gym-based fitness instructors
  • This is an entry level qualification for the health and fitness industry and therefore has no academic entry requirements
  • Learners should be aged 16+
  • We strongly recommend that you have experience of gym-based exercises including free weights
  • You should be fit enough to cope with the physical exertion and individual participation involved in the course
  • 16-18 year-olds may need to be supervised in the workplace, once they have achieved the qualification
  • There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2

Fitness Instructor Level 2:

Unit 1 Anatomy and physiology for exercise
Unit 2 Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
Unit 3 Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
Unit 4 Principles of exercise, fitness and health
Unit 5 Planning gym-based exercise
Unit 6 Instructing gym-based exercise



This course consists of theory and practical assessments. In order to complete the course we are required to see that you have both the knowledge and the practical skills in order for you to pass.


Theory paper 1
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Exercise

  • This theory paper consists of 50 multiple choice exam questions


Theory paper 2
Unit 4: Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health

    • This theory paper consists of 32 multiple choice exam questions


Practical assessment
Unit 6: Instructing gym-based exercise


Learner Achievement Portfolio (LAP)

      • This can be emailed to you as an editable PDF format
      • Your LAP can be emailed back and forth to your tutor until it achieves a pass
      • Your LAP must be complete before you sit your practical assessment
